Late Solomon Arase, former Inspector General of Police and ex-PSC Chairman, remembered for his service and reforms.

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the death of its 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Ehigiator Arase, CFR, (Rtd.).

He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness. He was 69.

The news was formally communicated to the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by the late IGP’s son, Solomon Osabohien Arase Jr.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Edo State, Arase had an illustrious career in the Nigeria Police Force, which he joined on December 1, 1981.

He served in key positions including Principal Staff Officer to three IGPs between 2002 and 2008, Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, pioneer AIG in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau, and DIG at the Force Criminal Investigation Department.

In April 2015, he was appointed the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police and retired on June 21, 2016.

Arase, later served as Chairman of the Police Service Commission from January 2023 to June 2024. A Fellow of the Defence College and a member of the Body of Benchers, Arase held degrees in Political Science, Law, and a Ph.D. in Public Law.

During his tenure as IGP, Arase introduced significant reforms, including the creation of the Complaint Response Unit to ensure swift responses to public complaints and better protection of citizens’ rights. His initiatives and leadership left a lasting impact on police reforms and national security.

Beyond policing, he established the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), which provided scholarships to outstanding students, with a focus on children of fallen police officers and indigent youths.

IGP Kayode Egbetokun, during a condolence visit to the family in Abuja, described Arase as “a visionary leader whose contributions to the Nigeria Police Force and national security will never be forgotten,” while extending the condolences of the entire Force to his family, friends, and colleagues.

Arase is remembered as a professional who served with honour, courage, and distinction.
