Fresh Concerns Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Health, Medical Council Confirms Multiple Complications

Fresh concerns have emerged over the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, following a medical review conducted by a team of experts from the Nigerian Medical Council.

Lawyers representing Kanu including Barrister Maxwell Opara disclosed this on Wednesday after visiting him at a Department of State Services (DSS) facility located along the Lugbe Expressway in Abuja.

According to a Facebook post by Barrister Opara, the council on Tuesday deployed senior medical practitioners drawn from various zones to reassess earlier tests carried out by renowned surgeon, Prof. Aghaji, who had raised alarm over Kanu’s deteriorating health.

Prof. Aghaji’s initial findings indicated that Kanu is battling multiple health challenges, including complications with his kidney, pancreas, prostate, heart, as well as a dangerous depletion of potassium in his bloodstream. The professor deposed to these findings in an affidavit before the court.

However, the situation became controversial after a DSS doctor, identified as Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, filed a counter affidavit seeking to discredit Prof. Aghaji’s report, despite allegedly not conducting any personal examination on Kanu.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), was said to have intervened by requesting an independent review from the Nigerian Medical Council to resolve the discrepancies.

Speaking after their visit, Kanu’s legal team confirmed that the panel of medical experts not only validated Prof. Aghaji’s findings but also uncovered additional, more severe health complications.

“As of today, September 24, 2025, this independent team of doctors has confirmed all of Prof. Aghaji’s earlier discoveries and found more life-threatening issues,” one of the lawyers said. “They revealed that Mazi has a serious nasal complication requiring urgent surgery, which they linked to torture he suffered during his arrest and alleged rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.”

The lawyers warned that their client’s health continues to deteriorate daily, urging the Nigerian government and the international community to intervene before it is too late.

“It is only a man that is alive that can stand trial,” they stressed. “We do not understand what specific interest Dr. Nasiru Mohammed has in contradicting the facts of this matter, or what he stands to gain from disputing the true state of our client’s health.”

They further reiterated that Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in custody since his extradition in 2021, “has not committed any crime known to law” but is facing what they described as “grave injustice” for advocating the freedom of his people.
