Grassroots football in Nigeria is getting a major boost as the Future Pro League International (FPLI) prepares to hold its inaugural player trials in Abuja this weekend.
The trials, organised by FPLI founder Clifford Ikwang, will take place on Saturday, 26 July, at the Turf Arena Sports Centre inside River Plate Park from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
According to Mr Ikwang, all 220 available slots for registration have been filled, but latecomers are advised to turn up at the venue in case of no-shows.
“It’s going to be a great day,” he said. “What excites me most is seeing people I’ve never met—people who simply came across a post online and decided to take a chance. It speaks volumes about the power of social media.”
The trials will use a team-elimination format, with winning teams advancing to the next round. Losing teams will have another opportunity on an additional trial day. Outstanding players will progress to a structured tournament phase.
“We’re not just organising trials—we’re building a full ecosystem,” Mr Ikwang explained. “Players who make it into the league will receive official kits, have all matches recorded, gain digital player profiles, and compete regularly.”
The FPLI says its mission is to revive the culture of grassroots football, create consistent competition, and provide a clear pathway for young talent. Talks with potential sponsors are ongoing, but Mr Ikwang stressed that the focus is on partnerships aligned with the league’s vision for youth development.
With enthusiasm building, the FPLI hopes to become a transformative platform for emerging Nigerian footballers, giving them a chance to showcase their skills and progress to professional opportunities.
