State governors are considering a new CNG transport programme aimed at reducing public transport fares and lowering commuting costs for Nigerians.
The proposal, known as the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP), was discussed at the third meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Kwara State Governor and NGF Chairman, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, chaired the meeting, which several governors and deputy governors attended.
The forum received a presentation on the proposed NACTP, a state-led initiative designed to pass the lower operating costs of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles on to passengers through reduced fares.
Under the proposal, participating state governments would support vehicle conversions to CNG, fleet acquisition and the development of infrastructure needed to operate the programme.
Transport operators would, in turn, commit to fare reductions under the scheme.
The governors acknowledged the programme’s potential to ease transportation costs but said they needed to consider its financing structure and implementation framework before proceeding.
The forum also considered opportunities for states to participate in CANEX Weekend 2026 and the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole presented the opportunities to the governors, highlighting the potential for states to showcase local products, attract investment and expand their participation in intra-African trade.
Both events are scheduled to take place in Lagos
