Group Urges Stronger School Security Following Release of Kebbi Students

The Save Public Education Campaign (SPEC) has welcomed the safe return of 24 schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State, warned that the attack highlights persistent security gaps in Nigeria

In a statement issued on Wednesday, SPEC praises the resilience of the rescued students, who endured “unimaginable trauma,” and called for urgent measures to protect learners, teachers, and education infrastructure.

“No child should ever fear for their life simply because they seek an education,” the group said, describing mass abductions and school attacks as a direct threat to Nigeria’s future.

SPEC urged the federal and Kebbi state governments, along with security agencies, to implement stronger protections, including well-trained security personnel, early warning systems, and community-based intelligence networks.

The organisation also called for a transparent investigation into the abduction and comprehensive rehabilitation for the rescued students, including medical care, psychosocial support, and reintegration into school.

Reiterating that education is a fundamental right under the Child Rights Act 2023, SPEC stressed the importance of government prioritisation and adequate funding for safe, functional schools.

The group further highlighted the need for collaboration between authorities, civil society, and local communities to prevent future attacks, adding:

“Our schools must be sanctuaries of learning, not theatres of violence.”
