The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, who died at the age of 61
In a statement released on Friday, the Chairman of the Committee, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, extends heartfelt condolences to Rufai’s family, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Lagos State Government, the Federal Government, and football fans across Nigeria and beyond.
“On behalf of the House Committee on Sports, I commiserate with the family and all those affected by the loss of a true Nigerian sports legend, Peter Rufai was not only a patriot but a symbol of excellence in Nigerian football, whose dedication and talent brought immense pride to the nation.” Amadu said. “
Hon. Amadu highlighted Rufai’s outstanding contributions to Nigerian football, particularly his crucial role in Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph in Tunisia and his participation in Nigeria’s debut at the FIFA World Cup in the United States that same year—where the Super Eagles earned international admiration, finishing among the tournament’s top five teams.
Fondly known as “Dodomayana” by fans, Rufai launched his professional career with Stationery Stores FC in Lagos in 1980.
He was among the early trailblazers who took Nigerian football to the international stage, playing in top leagues in Belgium, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Spain.
His groundbreaking journey opened doors for many future generations of Nigerian footballers in Europe.
Following his retirement, Rufai remained devoted to football development, investing his personal resources into establishing the Staruf Football Academy in Lagos.
The academy became a nurturing ground for young talents and a beacon for grassroots football in Nigeria.
Hon. Amadu lauded Rufai’s unwavering service to the sport and prayed for strength and solace for his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
