SEC DG Dr. Emomotimi Agama underscores accountability as key to investor confidence at a stakeholder engagement in Abuja.

The Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has reaffirm that accountability and transparency remain critical to strengthening investor confidence and deepening Nigeria’s capital market.

Dr. Agama made the remark in Abuja while delivering a goodwill message at a stakeholder engagement on internal control over financial reporting in the public sector, organized by SIAO in collaboration with the Financial Reporting Council (FRC). The event was themed *“Strengthening Accounting and Transparency through ICRC.”*

According to a statement on Sunday by the Commission, the SEC chief, robust internal control mechanisms over financial reporting are essential to market integrity and public trust.

“Internal control over financial reporting is a critical part of disclosures. Whether in the securities market, public companies, or other organizations, these controls reinforce accountability, transparency, and integrity within the financial system,” he states.

Agama stresses that investor confidence depends on the level of transparency demonstrated by financial institutions and market operators.

“For investors, what matters is accountability, stewardship, and assurance that people are doing what they ought to do. When management upholds these principles, investors are more likely to commit funds,” he noted.

The SEC boss also highlightes the significance of the newly enacted Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 25, describing it as a landmark reform for the Nigerian capital market.

“The ISA 2025 has introduced far-reaching reforms to foster a more transparent and efficient market. We are already witnessing improved investor sentiment and increased confidence in the system,” Agama says.

He reiterates that under his leadership, the SEC is committed to professionalism, adherence to the law, and reforms that will safeguard investors while driving market growth.
