The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has raised an alarm with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), over what it describes as an “illegal” gubernatorial primary being conducted by the caretaker committee of the party under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman.
The caretaker committee had earlier announced its intention to review the gubernatorial primaries held by the Abure faction, which produced George Moghalu as the party’s candidate for the upcoming November 2025 gubernatorial election.
In a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, clarifies that the primaries were conducted in accordance with election guidelines and that the name of the party’s candidate was duly submitted to INEC.
He further mentioned that the party is now waiting for the appropriate time to launch campaigns in Anambra state.
The statement also references INEC’s official communication, which mandates that all political parties must conclude their primaries on or before April 10, 2025, as stipulated by Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
The Abure faction emphasised that they would take action against party members who seek to destabilise the party, insisting that all members must abide by party rules and respect the party’s supremacy, as recently upheld by the Supreme Court.
“We are, however, calling on party members in Anambra State and, particularly, lovers of democracy in Nigeria, to help rescue Anambra State from imminent collapse due to bad governance inflicted by the present leadership in the state,
“Of all the major candidates on offer, Labour Party has produced the best and most experienced candidate, whose track record in both the private and public sectors speaks for itself.” the statement concludes”.
