The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to enhancing capacity-building collaborations with democratic institutions across all levels of governance to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Professor Sulaiman gave the assurance during the opening of a three-day training workshop organized by NILDS in partnership with Absolute Consultancy Services, for members of Jigawa State House of Assembly and Chairmen of the Local Government Councils who converged on the Institute’s Permanent Site at Piwoyi, Abuja.

Welcoming the delegation, led by Rt. Hon. Speaker Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, Deputy Speaker Hon. Sani Isah Guman, and the State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Development, Hon. Garba MK Hadeija, Professor Sulaiman commended the collaborative efforts between Jigawa’s executive and legislative arms.

He praised Governor Mallam Umar Namadi, for his visionary leadership in strengthening democratic structures in the state.

Highlighting the workshop’s significance, the Director General stated that the modules were meticulously designed to enhance the effectiveness of state legislatures and local government administration.

Key focus of the workshop

  • Strengthening oversight mechanisms.
  • Understanding constitutional powers of local governments.
  • Legislative procedures for enacting laws.
  • Techniques for improving local government revenue.
  • Budgetary processes, resource allocation, and addressing challenges of local government autonomy in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

Professor Sulaiman, urged participants to actively engage resource persons with thought-provoking contributions to deepen their understanding of these critical governance issues.

The workshop reflects NILDS’ ongoing efforts to foster good governance and strengthen democratic practices, particularly at the grassroots level.
