The Nigerian Army has confirmed a seamless leadership transition as Major General Waidi Shaibu officially assumed office as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) at a colourful ceremony held at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
The event marked the formal handover of command from the outgoing COAS and newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede.
In a statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Major General Shaibu praised General Oluyede for his outstanding leadership, mentorship, and commitment to the growth of the Nigerian Army.

He highlighted his predecessor’s achievements in equipment procurement, infrastructure development, and the “Soldier First” initiative, which prioritized troop welfare and operational readiness.
The new Chief of Army Staff pledged to build on these achievements and enhance synergy among security agencies to strengthen national security.
He vowed to review the country’s current security situation, improve operational efficiency, and boost troop morale to ensure effective responses to emerging threats.
“I salute the courage, passion, and resilience of our troops in the field. Their sacrifices remain the cornerstone of our collective success,” Major General Shaibu said.
Major General Shaibu expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for the confidence reposed in him, leading officers in observing a minute of silence for fallen soldiers.
In his farewell address, Lieutenant General Oluyede expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and the privilege to serve as COAS and now CDS.

He commended the officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army for their loyalty and urged them to continue supporting the new leadership.
The ceremony featured the signing of handover notes, decoration of the new COAS, inspection of the quarter guard, and group photographs with senior officers and field commanders.
