Minister Charges New Fire Officers on Proactive Disaster Management

The Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has emphasised the need for proactive disaster management and improved emergency response across the country.

Tunji-Ojo, handed down the charge as the Federal Fire Service (FFS) graduated its largest officer training cohort in recent years.

Represented by the Secretary to the Board, Major General A.M. Jibril (rtd), the Minister charged the newly trained officers to uphold discipline, professionalism and unwavering dedication to national service.

He said the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening institutions responsible for emergency preparedness and public safety.

Over 700 cadets drawn from the 2022 and 2024 recruitment exercises successfully completed the intensive training programme, which covered fire suppression techniques, emergency response operations, leadership development, teamwork, and decision-making under pressure.

The Minister noted that the scale and quality of the training reflect ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing operational readiness and nationwide coverage.

Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Adeyemi, said capacity building remains a strategic priority for the Service as it works to meet emerging fire and disaster challenges.

He added that the passing out of the new officers reinforces the Service’s drive to improve response times and service delivery across the country.

The Secretary to the Board further stressed the importance of sustained training, discipline and institutional collaboration in building resilient security and emergency agencies.

Plateau State Deputy Governor, Her Excellency, Josephine Pyo, congratulated the cadets and commended the Federal Fire Service for its critical role in preserving lives and property.

Outstanding cadets were honoured for excellence, including:
• Most Disciplined Cadet: ASF II Sarki Francis Uzomi
• Best in Field Drills: ASF II Anyim Joshua
• Best in Academics: ASF II Opon Pius Dominic
The event drew service chiefs, senior government officials and dignitaries, reflecting the national significance of the ceremony.

With the graduation of the new officers, the Federal Fire Service has further strengthened its manpower and enhanced its capacity to protect lives and property nationwide.
