NAICOM, FRSC launch joint committee to enforce compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have inaugurated a Joint Committee on the Enforcement of Compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance, a key step toward implementing the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025.

The inauguration, held at NAICOM Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, underscores both agencies’ commitment to road safety, insurance compliance, and prompt compensation for accident victims.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Insurance, Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, commended the FRSC for its partnership, noting that the collaboration would strengthen enforcement and deliver real benefits to Nigerians.

He highlighted the committee’s goals, which include:

Nationwide enforcement of compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance; Integration of vehicle registration and insurance databases; Enhanced compensation for road accident victims; and Public education on insurance obligations and consumer rights.

Omosehin emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reforming critical sectors for inclusive national growth.

In his remarks, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, described the collaboration as a model of inter-agency synergy that would improve insurance enforcement, promote welfare of road users, and enhance the government’s ability to provide financial and medical support to accident victims.

He reaffirmed FRSC’s readiness to support the initiative through technology integration, data sharing, and field operations, stressing that partnership among public institutions remains vital for achieving national development goals.

Presenting the committee’s Terms of Reference (ToR), the Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, listed key responsibilities such as enforcing compliance, reducing uninsured vehicles, promoting awareness, ensuring real-time verification, and supporting micro insurance for drivers and passengers.

Co-chaired by senior officials from both agencies, with NAICOM serving as the Secretariat, the Committee will coordinate joint field operations, public sensitization campaigns, and policy evaluation to enhance consumer confidence and compliance.
