The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) is heading into what promises to be a decisive election, but the build-up has been clouded by controversy.

Protests, petitions, and conflicting eligibility rulings have stirred tension within the cricket community, as some aspirants were disqualified and later reinstated in dramatic fashion.

These developments have left stakeholders calling for transparency and unity as the federation prepares to choose its next leadership.

At the center of the unfolding drama is former NCF President, Emeka Onyeama, who has remained calm despite the turbulence.

Onyeama, contesting for a return to the federation’s board, insists his focus is squarely on repositioning Nigerian cricket, not on the distractions surrounding the electoral process.

“I cannot make meaningful contributions to cricket if I remain on the sidelines,” Onyeama told news men. “The board is where decisions that shape the game are made. Being there gives me the platform to drive reforms, attract private sector funding, and push grassroots development. That’s my mission, and nothing will shift my focus from it.”

Onyeama has consistently championed grassroots expansion as the backbone of cricket’s future in Nigeria. He argues that while competitions and national team activities are important, the long-term survival of the sport depends on wider youth engagement.

“Beyond tournaments, we must spread cricket into secondary schools and universities,” he said. “Nigeria’s cricket cannot thrive without structured grassroots programmes. My plan is to deepen the sport’s presence in higher institutions, because undergraduates represent the next pool of talent and leadership for the game.”

Another key area of focus for Onyeama is digital engagement. He believes the federation must adapt to modern trends in sports promotion if cricket is to capture the attention of Nigeria’s younger generation.

“We cannot afford to ignore the platforms where young people spend their time,” he stressed. “TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) must become key tools for growing the game. Equally, live-streaming of domestic matches should be standard practice to build interest and attract sponsorships.”

Onyeama congratulated the newly elected athletes’ and technical representatives, describing their victories as crucial in giving players and professionals a stronger voice in administration. However, he was quick to emphasize that their election is only the beginning of the hard work.

“Every member of the board must be ready to contribute meaningfully. It’s not about titles; it’s about effort. Cricket in Nigeria needs a collective push to move forward,” he noted.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding the electoral process, Onyeama remains optimistic that the outcome could mark a turning point for Nigerian cricket. He urged all stakeholders—administrators, players, coaches, and fans—to embrace unity and use the elections as a springboard for progress.

“This election, turbulent as it may seem, is an opportunity to reset the direction of Nigerian cricket. With discipline, vision, and collective responsibility, we can place the sport on a sustainable path. The journey is not easy, but the possibilities are endless,” he concluded
