The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to nation-building through education, with the commissioning of the newly renovated Christ Assembly Nursery and Primary School in Ajegunle, Lagos.
The project, executed by the Tincan Island Port Command, marks a significant milestone under the Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, Customs Cares, which aims to impact at least 50,000 Nigerian students this year.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, who led the commissioning, describes the project as a symbol of renewed hope and an intentional investment in Nigeria’s future.
“We’re proud our intervention has created a better learning environment,” he said. “More importantly, it shows that under President Bola Tinubu, our children can learn in dignity and aspire to be their best.”
In a statement on Friday, the CGC announced that 10,000 pupils have already benefited from the initiative—with 3,000 in Lagos—and that 2,000 more would be reached that day through the distribution of school kits including uniforms, shoes, raincoats, and bags.
The statement by Customs spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, notes that Customs Cares programme also focuses on healthcare, ICT, potable water, and support for the creative industry—all aligned with national development goals.
Also present were key dignitaries including His Royal Highness, Oba Muhammed Maruf, the Olumakinwa of Apapa Kingdom; Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA Chairman, Mayor Fatai Ayoola; and Lagos State Commissioner for Basic Education, Jamiu Ali-Balogun.
Zonal Coordinator for Zone A, ACG Charles Orbih, describes the initiative as a model for impactful public engagement, while CSR Unit Head, Comptroller Patience Ibrahim, said it reflects the Service’s enduring commitment to community partnerships.
The school’s Headmistress, Esther Ogunfuyi, thanked the NCS for its support, describing the gesture as a vote of confidence in the pupils’ future.
The event concluded with cultural performances by the pupils and the formal handover of the renovated school and educational materials.
