In a national broadcast marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledged the hardships facing Nigerians, while outlining the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, restore security, and support citizens.
President Tinubu highlighted persistent economic pressures, including high inflation and reliance on past oil revenues, while claiming a rebound with 4.23% GDP growth in Q2 2025 and inflation at 20.12%. He stressed that reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification were necessary to curb rent-seeking but acknowledged that these measures have affected everyday Nigerians.
“The tough choices were unavoidable to redirect funds toward critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare,” Tinubu said, urging patience and civic responsibility.
Rising non-oil revenue and tax-to-GDP ratio of 13.5%
Foreign reserves at $42 billion
Surge in manufactured exports by 173%
However, critics argued that these achievements remain unevenly felt across households, with inflation, unemployment, and exchange rate volatility continuing to strain families.
Security Threats and National Stability
Tinubu highlighted ongoing security challenges, noting that Boko Haram, separatist violence, and banditry still threaten national stability. He praised the military for progress but acknowledged that thousands of displaced citizens remain vulnerable, especially in Northeast and bandit-affected regions.
Youth, Employment, and Digital Economy
Addressing youth concerns, the President spotlighted initiatives like the Nigeria Education Loan Fund and iDICE programme, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship. Yet, experts warn that access to these programs remains limited, and broader employment generation is critical as many households struggle with basic needs.
Social Welfare and Infrastructure Gaps
While N330 billion has been disbursed to eight million households, infrastructure deficits persist. Projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Eastern Rail Project are underway, but delays and regional disparities remain significant concerns for citizens.
Call to Action Amid Hardship
Tinubu urged Nigerians to support local industries, pay taxes, and focus on production rather than consumption. His message underscored shared sacrifice and national responsibility, emphasizing that reforms must ultimately benefit citizens to sustain recovery.
