The 2025 Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Zone 3 Nations Cup has underscored a new sporting rivalry in West Africa, with Nigeria and Ghana dominating the four-day competition in Port-Bouët, Ivory Coast, and underlining the region’s growing stature in global beach volleyball.

Staged at Agora Anani Beach from August 26 to 29, the tournament recorded its highest-ever turnout, featuring seven nations, 16 men’s pairs, and 12 women’s pairs.

The expanded field showcased the sport’s surging popularity, with packed stands cheering thrilling matches that blended tactical finesse and physical endurance.

Nigeria extended its legacy in the women’s game, claiming both gold and bronze medals, while Ghana established itself as the men’s team to beat, securing gold and bronze. Together, the two Anglophone rivals walked away with four of the six medals on offer, leaving just silver for Benin and Niger.

Beyond the medals, the Nations Cup provided a glimpse into the sport’s future in the sub-region. Organisers lauded Ivory Coast for hosting what has been described as the smoothest edition of the tournament, with nearly 30 teams testing logistics and attracting attention from sponsors, fans, and continental officials.

Analysts say the twin dominance of Nigeria and Ghana reflects not only investment in grassroots volleyball but also the emergence of West Africa as a serious force on the continental stage. With growing infrastructure, stronger competition, and rising fan interest, beach volleyball in the sub-region is poised for bigger achievements globally.
