Abuja, Nigeria – July 24, 2025
Nigeria has rolled out the red carpet for the continent’s strongest athletes as over 400 competitors and officials from 20 African nations gather in Abuja for the 14th Africa Armwrestling Championship.
Speaking at the opening media briefing, Engineer Samuel Jackson, President of the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation, expressed gratitude to the African armwrestling community for their unity and commitment to the sport.
“On behalf of the federation, our athletes, and our board, I warmly welcome our African brothers and sisters. Abuja is proud to host this championship,” Jackson said.
“This is a moment for reflection, growth, and thanksgiving. Everyone has arrived safely, and we are set for a successful tournament.”
Honourable Adeboye Adeyinka, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), described the championship as a platform for showcasing African resilience, strength, and talent.
“This prestigious event brings together top athletes from across the continent,” he stated.
“Beyond the competition, it is a celebration of African strength and unity.”
He emphasized that the championship also serves as a qualifier for the 2025 World Armwrestling Championship in Bulgaria, and a benchmark for the 2027 All-African Games. He called on Nigerians and sports lovers to rally behind the athletes.
“We are more than ready. Let’s come out in numbers and cheer on our champions as they battle for continental glory.”
Fair Play and Strict Officiating Emphasized
On the issue of officiating, Husseini Akueteh Addy, Director of Training for the Africa Armwrestling Federation (AFA) and a World Junior Referee, highlighted the importance of understanding competition rules.
“The biggest problems in tournaments often stem from a lack of knowledge of the rules. When athletes and coaches don’t understand the rules, that’s when they feel they’re being cheated,” Addy explained.
“I may be strict, but I’m fair. I enforce the rules because that’s how the sport gains respect and credibility.”
Addy urged team heads to ensure that both athletes and officials are thoroughly familiar with the rules, adding that officiating at the championship will uphold international standards.
The Africa Armwrestling Federation (AFA), headquartered in Accra, Ghana, continues to lead technical training and officiating development across the continent.
Dignitaries, High Stakes, and Continental Pride
The event is also being graced by top dignitaries, including Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the African Armwrestling Federation; Engineer Samuel Jackson of Nigeria; and Mr. Simonesu Sim, representing the global armwrestling body.
Running through July 28, 2025, the championship features competitions across youth, senior, and para-athlete categories. With fierce matchups expected, the event promises thrilling displays of strength, passion, and sportsmanship.
As Africa’s best armwrestlers go head-to-head in Abuja, the tournament is poised to leave a lasting mark—strengthening unity and cementing the continent’s place on the global stage.
