Nigeria’s House of Representatives has launched a nationwide distribution of sports equipment in a bid to revive grassroots sports and boost youth development.

The initiative, unveiled on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, will see sporting kits distributed across all 360 federal constituencies. The programme is spearheaded by the House Committee on Sports in collaboration with the National Sports Commission.

The equipment includes football boots, jerseys, and training gear aimed at encouraging youth participation in sports and discovering new talent.

Speaking at the launch, Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas urged lawmakers to prioritise investments in sports development over infrastructure projects that often remain incomplete.

“It is unacceptable that a country of over 230 million people returns from international competitions without medals, while smaller nations excel,” he said. “To reclaim our sporting glory, we must rebuild from the ground up.”

Abbas criticised the proliferation of underutilised skill acquisition centres and called for resources to be directed toward community-based sports initiatives.

Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadu, said the intervention is part of a broader plan to reinvigorate grassroots sports and promote local talent. He added that each constituency would receive a share of the equipment, with lawmakers ensuring it reaches local communities.

“This is more than a symbolic gesture. It’s a strategic step toward reviving sports engagement and nurturing talent at the grassroots,” Amadu said, adding that the next phase of the programme would focus on building mini-stadiums across the country.
