Nigeria’s Housing Deficit Hits 14.925 Million Units in 2025

Nigeria’s housing deficit stood at 14.925 million units in 2025, according to newly released data by the Technical Committee of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

The figures, unveiled as part of the Ministry’s ongoing sector review, reflect persistent supply gaps driven by rapid population growth, increasing urbanisation, and limited access to long-term housing finance.

Commending the Technical Committee, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, said the exercise has resolved long-standing uncertainty around housing sector data.

“One of the biggest gaps in our sector has been the absence of reliable, centralized, and actionable housing data,” Dangiwa said.

The Minister noted that the new figures provide a credible foundation for planning and policy intervention in the housing sector.

According to the Ministry, the deficit estimates were derived from multiple validated sources, including national household surveys and housing census data, ensuring accuracy and consistency.

To address data gaps and strengthen policy formulation, the Technical Committee is establishing a National Housing Data Centre, which will support housing delivery planning and sector reforms.

The updated deficit figures further reinforce the need for coordinated reforms in land administration, housing supply, and the expansion of mortgage finance to bridge Nigeria’s housing gap.
