The Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, has called for greater consistency in judicial interpretations, describing it as essential to upholding judicial integrity.
Speaking at a one-day public dialogue on judicial reforms in Abuja, Professor Sulaiman stressed that clarity and uniformity in court rulings are vital to sustaining public trust in the justice system.
The event, held at the Institute’s permanent site, was themed “One Judgement, Many Meanings: Navigating the Divergent Interpretation of Court Decisions in Nigeria.”
Professor Sulaiman said the dialogue was convened to examine how varied interpretations of court decisions affect the delivery of justice, public confidence, and the broader democratic process.
He noted that while legal interpretation naturally evolves with societal changes, such evolution must remain anchored in transparency, coherence, and a commitment to justice.
The NILDS Director-General also reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to promoting dialogue and reforms that strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The forum forms part of NILDS’ ongoing efforts to enhance legislative and democratic governance through research, capacity building, and public engagement.
