NILDS DG Sulaiman Seeks Accountability, Reforms in Public Service

By Sulyman Gobir

The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, has called for greater accountability among technocrats and practical reforms to improve public service delivery in Nigeria.

Professor Sulaiman made the call on Tuesday, while receiving a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Public Administration of Nigeria, CIPAN.

He emphasised that technocrats should be held accountable for the success or otherwise of governance, given their critical roles in policy formulation, implementation and the administration of public institutions.

The NILDS DG urged CIPAN to develop practical strategies to address bureaucratic bottlenecks and make the civil service and Ministries, Departments and Agencies more efficient and responsive.

Professor Sulaiman stressed the need for lasting solutions to challenges affecting public administration and urged the delegation to develop strategies that would better align the civil service with government objectives.

Earlier, the Registrar of CIPAN, Dr Emmanuel Olufowose, proposed stronger collaboration with NILDS on research and policy initiatives to address emerging challenges in public administration and public service delivery.

Dr Olufowose said the proposed areas of collaboration would include institutional reform, accountability, digital governance, strategic management and sustainable development.

He described NILDS as a foremost institution in legislative studies, democratic governance, policy research and capacity development.
