The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman, inaugurated a seven-member Post Legislative Scrutiny (PLS) Unit, at the institute’s permanent site in Piwoyi, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, Professor Sulaiman noted that NILDS is pioneering the institutionalisation of the PLS Unit at both national and sub-national legislative levels, being the first training hub to implement such an initiative
He emphasised that the establishment of the PLS aligns with global best practices and reflects NILDS’ commitment to advancing legislative impact assessment.
The PLS Unit, established through a collaborative effort of NILDS and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) since 2021, aims to evaluate the effectiveness as well as impact of the enacted laws on citizens’ lives.
In addition, Professor Sulaiman, also inaugurated a nine-member committee tasked with upgrading NILDS’ Training Brochure.

The committee, chaired by Dr. John Olarewaju, a consultant in the Training Department, is expected to create a standardized brochure that reflects globally evolving legislative trends, addressing the needs of paramilitary staff and stakeholders in democratic institutions.

The committee has been given one week to complete and submit its recommendations.
