In a major step toward strengthening grassroots rugby development in Nigeria, the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) is set to host a Technical Introduction (TI) Coaching Training Program in Abuja from October 23 to 25, 2025.

This intensive three-day training initiative reflects NRFF’s unwavering commitment to nurturing a new generation of rugby coaches equipped with modern coaching techniques, global best practices, and an unshakeable commitment to player safety and development.

The program will bring together representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, fostering a nationwide effort to uplift rugby at the grassroots level. Participants will receive hands-on instruction under the guidance of certified professionals, including World Rugby-accredited instructor Wuraola Hussaini, who emphasized the program’s practical focus.

“This training allows coaches to apply what they’ve learned theoretically,” Hussaini explained. “It’s part of NRFF’s commitment to instilling proper knowledge and techniques that will strengthen rugby coaching in Nigeria.”

Before attending the TI program, participants are required to complete three essential modules:

World Rugby Ready – An internationally recognized course focused on safety, risk management, and proper contact techniques to ensure safer play.

Concussion Management for the General Public – A critical course aimed at raising awareness around the short- and long-term effects of concussions, ensuring that coaches can recognize symptoms and respond appropriately.

Safeguarding Essentials – A foundational module on child protection and player welfare, empowering coaches with the knowledge to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes.

These pre-requisite certifications underline NRFF’s drive to professionalize rugby coaching, ensuring that all involved in the sport are adequately trained to uphold the highest safety and ethical standards.

Speaking ahead of the event, NRFF President Dr. Ademola Are commended both World Rugby and Rugby Africa for their consistent support in helping Nigeria build a robust rugby framework. He emphasized the importance of structured, certified coaching as a cornerstone of the federation’s long-term development strategy.

“Our goal is to ensure that our coaches are well-grounded in globally accepted methods,” Dr. Are said. “We want coaching in Nigeria to align with international standards and our long-term vision for rugby development. This kind of training is key to achieving that.”

The upcoming TI Coaching Training is more than just a workshop — it is a strategic investment in the future of Nigerian rugby. By decentralizing access to high-quality training, the NRFF is laying a solid foundation for the sport’s sustainable growth across all regions.

As the federation continues to build pathways from grassroots to elite levels, this program stands as a testament to NRFF’s vision: a future where Nigerian rugby thrives, led by empowered coaches, confident players, and safe, inclusive sporting environments.
