The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) has been thrown into mourning following the death of its President, Engr. Ifedayo Akindoju, who passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2025.

Akindoju, widely regarded as a pillar of Nigerian tennis, led the Federation with passion, commitment, and vision.

Under his leadership, the sport witnessed a resurgence with renewed focus on grassroots development, international exposure for players, and stronger administrative structures to support coaches, officials, and athletes.

In an official statement, the NTF described his passing as a monumental loss to the tennis community. “Engr. Akindoju served Nigerian tennis with unwavering passion, vision, and dedication, and his leadership has left an indelible mark on the growth and development of the sport in our nation,” the statement read.

“His commitment to players, coaches, officials, and the entire tennis family will forever be remembered.”

Beyond administration, Akindoju was known for his hands-on approach and personal investment in nurturing talent, ensuring Nigerian players gained opportunities to compete both locally and internationally.

Colleagues, players, and stakeholders have begun paying tributes, remembering him not only as a leader but also as a mentor and friend.

The NTF has extended its condolences to his family, friends, and the wider tennis community in Nigeria and abroad. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.

Akindoju’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian tennis, but his legacy of dedication and service will continue to inspire generations to come.
