The Nigeria United Kingdom Sports Award (NUKSA) is set to shine a spotlight on Nigerian rugby leadership as two of the sport’s most influential figures—Dr. Ademola Are, President of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), and General Manager Azeez Ladipo—are to be honoured at a high-profile fundraiser and gala in London.
The event, which will bring together stakeholders from across Nigerian and international sports, will celebrate the exceptional contributions of both men to the development and global recognition of rugby in Nigeria.
Are, a former national hockey player and long-serving sports administrator, will be recognised for his decades of service to grassroots sports development.
Rising through the ranks to become Director of Sports, Grassroots Development at the National Sports Commission, he was pivotal in the successful coordination of the National Youth Games and in forging strategic partnerships to expand youth participation across multiple sporting disciplines.
Reacting to the honour, Are described the recognition as unexpected but deeply motivating.
“I am really shocked by this recognition, but I appreciate it,” he said. “The work I have done over the years, and continue to do, is for the development of sports and the community. This award will motivate me to keep going.”
Also to be celebrated is Ladipo, a former captain of the national rugby team who has become synonymous with rugby’s revival and growth in Nigeria.
Having represented the country in multiple international tournaments, Ladipo has transitioned into administration, where he is driving reforms that emphasise referee and coach training, grassroots expansion, and women’s participation in rugby.
His relentless advocacy has not only helped rugby secure a stronger foothold at home but has also enhanced Nigeria’s profile within the global rugby community.
“Nigeria has what it takes to be ranked alongside South Africa, Namibia, and Kenya,” Ladipo remarked. “Perhaps this passion is what people have noticed, and I am truly appreciative of this honour.”
The London gala is expected to draw leading personalities in sports, business, and the Nigerian diaspora, making it a landmark occasion in celebrating Nigerian sporting excellence on the global stage.
