Nwabali Injury Scare Threatens Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes

Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, is in a race against time to be fit for both club and country after sustaining an injury during Chippa United’s 1-0 defeat to Richards Bay on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper was stretchered off in the first half of the South African league clash, sparking concerns over his availability for Chippa’s upcoming fixture against Orlando Pirates on Sunday, as well as Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.

Medical tests scheduled this week will determine the extent of Nwabali’s injury. His potential absence is a major blow to the Super Eagles, who are under pressure to keep their qualification hopes alive. Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa by six points, with just two matches remaining to secure a place in the final qualifying round.

Nwabali cemented his status as Nigeria’s number one at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), delivering standout performances that helped the Super Eagles reach the final. With 21 international caps to his name, he has become a vital presence between the sticks.

If ruled out, coach Eric Chelle will be forced to turn to less experienced options, including Adebayo Adeleye, Amas Obasogie, or Ebenezer Harcourt, when Nigeria takes on South Africa away on September 6 in what could prove to be a decisive encounter.

The Super Eagles’ qualification hopes may now hinge not just on results, but on the fitness of their dependable goalkeeper.
