Police to Map Flashpoints, Combat Disinformation Ahead of Polls

By Oluwakemi Kindness

The Nigeria Police Force says it will map electoral flashpoints, strengthen early-warning systems and track election disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, announced the measures on Monday at the opening of the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State.

Disu said the Police would also train officers in crowd management, conflict prevention, rapid response and human-rights-compliant policing.

He said the Force would work with INEC and other security agencies to protect electoral personnel, materials and voters.

The IGP also directed stronger use of technology for real-time reporting and faster response to security threats.

He said the Police would monitor fake election results, forged police statements and inflammatory online content that could trigger violence.

Disu warned political parties and their supporters against using thugs, buying votes, moving arms or threatening voters and electoral officials.

He said the Police would work with INEC, EFCC and ICPC to investigate vote-buying and other electoral offences.

Disu also warned police officers against taking sides, harassing voters or colluding with political actors.

“We protect citizens and enforce the law. We do not decide political outcomes,” he said.
