A Professor of Peace and Conflict Resolution, Edwin Igoche, has identified political polarization and extremism as major obstacles to achieving lasting peace and effective governance in Nigeria.
Speaking in a statement made available to Democracy Radio on Friday, the Professor emphasized that tackling these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach involving individuals, communities, organizations, and governments.
He also highlighted other critical issues such as social and economic inequality, corruption, abuse of power, and external threats.
Professor Igoche noted that political polarization discourages inclusive and respectful dialogue, making governance less effective.
He stressed that eliminating polarization would help promote media literacy, support community-based initiatives for social cohesion, and implement policies that address grievances while fostering social justice.
On economic inequality, he called for progressive policies that reduce disparities, alongside increased investment in education and job training programs to empower citizens.
To curb abuse of power, Professor Igoche advocated for the strengthening of institutions, enhanced transparency, and strict enforcement of anti-corruption policies.
He further urged regional and global cooperation on security matters, emphasizing the need to address root causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, and political oppression.
According to him, peace remains the foundation of a thriving democracy, enabling citizens to participate freely in governance and ensuring that democratic institutions function effectively.
