President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Grand Master Tayo Popoola, has pledged greater support for para-taekwondo athletes, with plans to create more opportunities for their participation in international competitions.

Popoola gave the assurance at the closing ceremony of the 14th Korean Ambassador Cup Taekwondo Championship in Abuja, reaffirming the federation’s commitment to inclusiveness, athlete development and expanding Nigeria’s presence on the global taekwondo stage.

She said para-taekwondo athletes must be given adequate preparation, technical support and competitive exposure to enable them to compete at continental and world championships.

According to the NTF president, the federation will identify promising athletes, improve their competitive standards and explore pathways for their participation in major international competitions.

Popoola also underscored the importance of the Korean Ambassador Cup as a ranking championship for assessing athletes’ performances and identifying potential national representatives.

“This is a ranking event, and it helps us assess our athletes and determine where they belong. It enables us to identify those who can represent Nigeria at various competitions based on their performances,” she said.

Reflecting on her first year in office, Popoola expressed satisfaction with the federation’s progress and commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its continued support.

She also called for increased corporate sponsorship of taekwondo, noting that stronger private-sector investment would boost competition organisation, athlete preparation and grassroots development.

The NTF president expressed optimism that sustained partnerships with the South Korean government, the NSC and corporate organisations would strengthen the sport and enhance Nigeria’s international competitiveness.

The 14th Korean Ambassador Cup featured athletes competing across various categories, while promoting sporting and cultural relations between Nigeria and South Korea.
