The Presidency has reaffirmed that Nigeria’s new tax laws will commence on January 1, 2026, as scheduled, dismissing speculations about any delay or suspension of the reforms.

In a press statement issued on December 30, 2025, President Bola Tinubu said the tax reforms, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts due to begin in 2026, would proceed as planned.

He described the reforms as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to establish a fair, competitive and sustainable fiscal framework for the country.

The President clarified that the new tax laws are not aimed at increasing taxes but are designed to drive structural reforms, promote harmonisation within the tax system and protect the dignity of citizens while strengthening the social contract between the government and the people.

Addressing public debates over alleged changes to some provisions of the laws, President Tinubu said no substantial issue had been identified that would justify disrupting the reform process.

He stressed that trust in governance is built through consistent and well-considered decisions, rather than reactive actions.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws, adding that the Presidency would continue to work with the National Assembly to promptly resolve any issues that may arise during implementation.

He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains committed to acting in the overriding public interest to deliver a tax system that promotes prosperity and shared responsibility across the country.
