President Bola Tinubu has called on officers of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold their duty of protecting citizens rather than intimidating them.

The President made this known during the 2nd Nigeria Police Awards and Commendation Ceremony held on Wednesday night in Abuja.

Represented by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of integrity and professionalism in police conduct.

“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” he said. “You must be guided by the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.”

The President commended the leadership of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and noted the importance of trust between the police and the communities they serve.

“The bond between the police and the communities they serve is critical to our collective peace and progress,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, praised the police for their commitment and effectiveness in tackling insecurity, particularly in Imo State.

“We are very appreciative of the work the police is doing today. Under the leadership of the IGP, the force has risen to the challenges of insecurity,” Uzodinma said.

“At one point, Imo State faced severe security challenges, but thanks to the efforts of the police and other security agencies, we now enjoy relative peace and safety.”

In his welcome address, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described the ceremony as a significant shift towards merit-based recognition within the force.

“The Awards and Commendation Ceremony stands as a bold symbol of our institutional shift: from entitlement to merit, from routine to excellence,” he said.

“This year’s award process was deliberate, rigorous, and transparent, aimed at institutionalizing merit within the Nigeria Police Force.”

He noted that award recipients were selected based on their outstanding performance and dedication.

“The officers honoured this evening did not apply for recognition. They earned it — through uncommon courage, ethical conduct, exceptional leadership, and unwavering dedication,” the IGP stated.

“To those not awarded tonight, let this ceremony stir your ambition. Excellence is not a finish line; it is a daily standard. We expect nothing less.”

The event was attended by top dignitaries including Senators, the Chief of Naval Staff, the Chief of Air Staff, DSS, the Comptroller General of Immigration, retired Inspectors General of Police, among others.

Police officers received awards and commendations across various categories for their exceptional service.
