Protests at NASS Over Senate’s Rejection of E-Voting Results

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has led a protest against the Senate’s rejection of mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

Obi described the decision as a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy, noting that the absence of electronic transmission contributed to disputes in past elections, including the 2023 general election.

The demonstration, tagged “Occupy NASS,” drew support from activists and civil society groups demanding that the Senate reverse its decision.

Meanwhile, the Senate cited potential technical glitches as a reason for rejecting electronic transmission.

However, Obi dismissed the concern, pointing out that other African countries have successfully implemented the system.

Similarly, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened nationwide protests if the matter is not addressed, signalling growing public pressure on lawmakers to reconsider the decision.
