Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on female golfers from across Africa to embrace sportsmanship, integrity and unity as the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) gets underway in Abuja.
Tinubu made the call during the ceremonial tee-off at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, where she declared the continental championship open.
She said the tournament’s theme, “Uniting Africa Through the Greens,” reflects golf’s ability to bridge national and cultural differences while fostering friendship, sisterhood and a shared African identity.
Addressing the participating golfers, the First Lady urged them to compete with passion and integrity, while allowing sportsmanship to guide their performances.
She also welcomed the foreign delegates and participants, encouraging them to explore Nigeria’s rich culture, landmarks and hospitality during their stay.
Tinubu commended the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), its President and Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, and the association’s executive council for bringing the championship to Nigeria.
She particularly praised the association’s Girls in Golf Legacy Project, which will introduce 300 young girls to the sport across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
According to her, the initiative will create opportunities for young girls to discover golf, develop their talents and become part of the sport’s future.
Earlier, Ahmed described hosting the championship for the third time as both an honour and a responsibility for Nigeria.
She said the competition provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships among African countries, despite differences in nationality, language and culture.
Ahmed added that while the tournament would produce winners, its greatest achievements would be the friendships established, unity strengthened and young girls inspired.
The 2026 AACT has brought together female golfers from 20 African countries to compete for continental honours and promote the development of women’s golf.
The championship also underscores Nigeria’s commitment to expanding participation in the sport and creating opportunities for the next generation of female golfers.
