Spain have set up a thrilling quarter-final clash with Euro 2024 hosts, Germany, after overcoming an early scare to comfortably defeat debutants, Georgia.
In their first major tournament appearance, Georgia withstood heavy pressure from Spain early on but shocked the crowd at Cologne Stadium by taking a surprise lead after 18 minutes.
Spain defender, Robin le Normand, inadvertently turned Otar Kakabadze’s curling cross into his net, capping off a devastating counter-attack and silencing the supporters behind the goal. Substitutes warming up rushed to celebrate with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who led Georgia’s celebrations in the corner. The goal boosted Georgia’s confidence, but Spain’s relentless pressure eventually paid off when Manchester City’s Rodri drilled a shot into the
bottom corner, beating goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who otherwise had another outstanding performance.
Spanish pressure did not stop as the 2008 and 2012 winners of the competition scored three more goals in a one-sided second-half.
