Police Commissioner Launches Weapon and Riot Control Training for FCT Officers Democracy Radio
By Adenekan Sofiat
As the festive season approaches, residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are raising concerns about the state of security in the region.
Traditionally, this period is marked by an influx of visitors, increased economic activities, and heightened celebrations, all of which demand an enhanced security framework to ensure the safety of lives and property.
Current Security Challenges in the FCT
The FCT, known for its status as the nation’s capital, has not been immune to security challenges.
Over the past year, residents have witnessed sporadic reports of armed robbery, kidnappings, and other criminal activities, particularly in satellite towns and along major entry and exit routes.
Bushy areas and poorly lit spots in parts of Gwarinpa, Lugbe, and Nyanya remain hotbeds of concern for residents, with many urging for improved policing and surveillance in these areas.
Moreover, with the economic challenges facing the nation, there is a perceived rise in petty crimes, as many individuals struggle to make ends meet.
Residents also point to traffic congestion, which often leaves commuters vulnerable to “one-chance” operators and street-level robberies.
What the FCT Minister is Doing
In response to these challenges, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has taken proactive measures to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a safe and peaceful festive season. Key initiatives include:
Strengthening Collaboration Among Security Agencies
The Minister recently convened a high-level meeting with security stakeholders, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Air Force, Civil Defence Corps, and the Department of State Services.
The focus of the meeting was to review operational strategies and implement a unified response to potential security threats across the FCT.
Deployment of Security Personnel
To address vulnerabilities in identified flashpoints, security personnel have been deployed to critical areas, including major highways, parks, and market zones.
Joint patrols involving the military and police are already underway to ensure rapid response to emergencies.
Clearance Operations
The Minister has approved a series of clearance operations targeting bushy and poorly lit areas that criminals could exploit.
These operations, which involve combing and securing identified locations, are aimed at neutralizing threats before they escalate.
Surveillance Technology and Community Policing
In line with modern security practices, the FCT administration is exploring the use of surveillance technology to monitor high-traffic areas.
The Minister has also emphasized the importance of community policing and has called on residents to report suspicious activities through established hotlines.
Traffic and Crowd Control Measures
Recognizing the increased movement of people and vehicles during the festive period, traffic officers have been mobilized to decongest busy areas, including the Abuja-Keffi expressway and Nyanya-Mararaba corridor.
Efforts are also being made to prevent bottlenecks at major shopping hubs like Wuse Market and Jabi Lake Mall, where large crowds are expected.
Reassurance to Residents
In a recent address, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, reassured residents that all security agencies are working tirelessly to ensure the festive season remains incident-free.
“We are intensifying activities at all borders and exit points while increasing patrols across flashpoints.
Residents should not panic when they see troops moving; these are proactive measures to ensure safety,” he said.
The Minister also appealed for cooperation from residents, urging them to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities.
“Security is a collective responsibility. With your support, we can make the FCT safe for everyone,” Wike stated.
Residents’ Reactions
While many residents have expressed appreciation for the steps taken by the Minister, some remain cautiously optimistic, calling for sustained efforts beyond the festive period.
“It’s good to see the government taking action, but we hope this won’t end after Christmas,” said a resident of Kubwa.
Conclusion
As the FCT gears up for the festivities, the measures implemented by the Minister and security agencies aim to ensure that residents and visitors can celebrate with peace of mind.
While challenges persist, the collaborative efforts between the government, security agencies, and the public offer hope for a safer and more secure capital city this holiday season.
