The Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice has confirmed that suspects arrested in connection with the killings in Yelwata, Benue State, will be arraigned on Monday, February 2, before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the
Federal High Court, Abuja.
In a statement on Sunday, Kamarudeen Ogundele, Senior Assistant to the AGF, said the arraignment followed a “painstaking investigation and collaboration among relevant government agencies.”
He assured Nigerians that justice would be served, adding that the move sends a strong signal to anyone threatening national security.
“The administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the protection of lives and property, as enshrined in the Constitution,” the statement read.
The arrests relate to a June attack on Yelwata, a community in Guma Local Government Area, where gunmen killed several residents and displaced hundreds. Following the incident, security operatives said some suspects had been taken into custody.
President Tinubu, who visited Benue State after the attacks, had urged security agencies to intensify efforts, questioning delays in apprehending the perpetrators during a stakeholders’ meeting at the State Government House in Makurdi.
Meanwhile, Governor Hyacinth Alia has renewed calls for the establishment of state policing and an intervention fund for affected communities. He emphasized that community policing is crucial to ending recurring violence and restoring peace in the largely food-producing state.
