The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called for greater private sector involvement in sports development.
SWAN who made the call during its Diamond Jubilee Celebration in Abuja, also honoured Makanjuola Mualá, founder of Water FC Academy, with a Distinguished Service Award for his contribution to sport development.[
The event focused on the challenges of youth sports funding and the crucial role individuals as well as private organisations play in nurturing emerging talent across Nigeria.

Mualá, recognised for his work in talent discovery through Water FC, said the award reflects the need for stronger collaboration between government, private stakeholders, and sports institutions.
“We have been doing this for decades, often without recognition or structured support, this shows how much more can be achieved if private initiatives receive stronger institutional backing.” Mualá said.

SWAN leadership noted that the recognition of contributors like Mualá is part of a broader effort to encourage partnerships that promote grassroots sports and youth empowerment.
The event also renewed discussions on creating policy frameworks that link sports academies, the media, and government agencies to improve athlete development as well as retention in Nigeria.

Observers say the recognition highlights ongoing calls for sustainable funding, regulatory support, and private investment to strengthen the country’s sports ecosystem.
SWAN Recognizes Role of Grassroots Administrators
Meanwhile, Benue-born sports administrator and philanthropist, Andiir Solomon, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for recognising his contribution to sports development in Nigeria.
Solomon, who serves as President of Flight Football Club, Gboko, received the honour during the association’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration in Abuja.

Speaking after receiving the prestigious award, Solomon described the recognition as a “special motivation and encouragement” to continue contributing to sports growth across the country.
“I’m very happy and honoured. This award means a lot to me because it serves as motivation and encouragement. It’s something very special and not something I take lightly,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Solomon noted that his involvement in sports began purely out of passion but has now grown into a lifelong mission.
“It all started as a passion, but over time, it has become part of me — a culture,” he stated. “This recognition only drives me to do more for the progress of our youth and the development of sports in Benue State and Nigeria.”

Solomon a former Board Member of Lobi Stars FC, has built a reputation for his commitment to nurturing young talents and promoting grassroots football in Benue State.
Through Flight FC, he also provided platforms for aspiring athletes to showcase their potential and pursue professional football careers.
He reaffirmed his dedication to empowering young athletes and improving sports structures in the region.
