The Independent National Electoral Commission,INEC) has charged the new Resident Electoral Commissioners (Recs) to prepare for the challenges of electioneering in Nigeria as the nation lacks reliable election calendar.

Speaking at the induction retreat for the new RECs in Lagos the Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmud Yakubu stated that the reality of the work in INEC is that there is no election season in Nigeria.  According to him, elections are held all-year round in addition to
numerous electoral activities such as voter registration adding that even the retreat is holding against the background of forthcoming governorship elections in Edo State in the next 81 days and Ondo State in the 137 days.

He told the new umpires that the retreat serve as an opportunity to review performance, reappraise processes, discuss innovations, engage service providers, interface with lawmakers on critical areas of reform.

Professor Yakubu, commended the Development Associates Incorporated (DAI) and the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) for supporting the retreat in particular and many other activities of the Commission in general.
