President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate implementation of the free healthcare access programme for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
He describes it as a cornerstone of his administration’s social protection agenda and a vital step in safeguarding the dignity of senior citizens.
The President also direct the prompt enforcement of long-overdue pension increases and the establishment of a minimum pension guarantee to serve as a financial lifeline for the most vulnerable retirees in the country.
Issuing the directives after receiving a detailed briefing from the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu stresses the urgent need to resolve the protracted police pension dispute.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President, Bayo Onanuga, notes that officers who dedicate their lives to protecting Nigerians must be assured of a dignified and peaceful retirement.
Oloworaran informs the President of ongoing measures to preserve the value of pension fund assets amid inflationary pressures, as well as plans to introduce foreign currency contribution windows to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
The President threw his full weight behind the proposed reforms, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive economic growth, improved welfare for pensioners, and the expansion of the CPS to cover more citizens.
“These reforms are about more than numbers and policies—they are about fairness, security, and the peace of mind our citizens deserve in their golden years,” Tinubu declared.
