President Bola Tinubu has pledged that his administration will ensure companies engaged in mineral exploration prioritize the health and safety of Nigerians and the communities hosting these operations.
The President made this commitment while receiving a presentation from Course 32 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja. The presentation was titled Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035.
During the session, President Tinubu also directed security agencies to intensify efforts against illegal mining activities across the country. He emphasized the importance of diversifying Nigeria’s economy and recognized the potential of the mining industry to contribute to national security and development.
Addressing the health implications of mining activities, President Tinubu expressed concern for those living near mining sites and stressed the need for early provision of medical centers and facilities to protect the lives and well-being of Nigerians.
The President also assured the NDC delegation of his administration’s commitment to completing the college’s permanent headquarters in Abuja. Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of the NDC, highlighted the institution’s significant contributions to national security and appealed for support in completing its permanent site, which has been delayed since 2010.
The NDC, established in 1992, has graduated 2,871 participants, including international representatives from 30 African countries and other nations such as Bangladesh, Brazil, and Germany.
