Traffic congestion has intensified along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after a trailer carrying a container fell on the Kara Bridge, forcing the closure of the bridge outward Lagos.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, bringing traffic to a standstill on the Lagos-bound section, with the resulting gridlock extending beyond the Berger area.
Motorists heading inward Lagos have also been affected, as vehicles are being forced to share one side of the expressway at the Kara Bridge.
The incident has further worsened the already difficult traffic situation caused by ongoing rehabilitation work on the bridge.
The Federal Government is currently replacing deteriorating expansion joints as part of a two-week rehabilitation project.
Efforts are underway to create an alternative route for motorists, with barriers being removed from a section of the bridge that was initially closed to traffic for the repairs.
The section is expected to be opened to vehicles to ease congestion and restore movement along the busy corridor.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and their counterparts from Ogun State are on the ground managing traffic and assisting motorists.
The rehabilitation, which began on September 8, 2026, was earlier postponed to allow for additional traffic management planning.
The project, directed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, involves the replacement of damaged expansion joints and is expected to end on September 22, 2026.
