President Donald Trump has formally ordered the United States to withdraw from 66 international organisations, accelerating a fundamental recalibration of America’s role in global institutions and marking one of the most decisive breaks from multilateralism in decades.

The directive was issued through a Presidential Memorandum signed on Wednesday and detailed in a White House fact sheet released on January 7, 2026. It mandates all US executive departments and agencies to immediately cease funding, participation and formal engagement with the affected organisations.

“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations that no longer serve American interests,” the White House said.

According to the administration, the withdrawals cover 35 non-United Nations bodies and 31 UN-linked entities that officials say operate in ways that undermine US national interests, economic priorities, security considerations or sovereign authority.

The White House said the action followed an extensive government-wide review initiated earlier in the year, examining every international intergovernmental organisation, treaty and convention to which the United States contributes funding or political support. The review concluded that continued involvement in several institutions no longer provides adequate returns for American taxpayers.

“These withdrawals will end American taxpayer funding and involvement in entities that advance globalist agendas over US priorities, or that address important issues inefficiently or ineffectively such that US taxpayer dollars are best allocated in other ways,” the statement said.
