The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken decisive action to curb growing cases of unruly behaviour among graduating students by banning all forms of sign-out celebrations across its campuses.
In a circular signed by the Registrar, Mr. Ademola Bobola, and released on Tuesday in Benin City, the university said the measure aims to restore discipline and preserve academic decorum during the final weeks of examinations.
According to Bobola, the management’s decision followed reports of disruptive activities in previous sessions, prompting the Senate to reaffirm its earlier resolution prohibiting sign-out events.
“The management declared that no sign-out celebration of any kind — including T-shirt signing, playing of loud music, or street parades — will be tolerated,” he stated.
He further warned that any student found flouting the directive risked rustication, expulsion, or withdrawal of certificate, stressing that UNIBEN would not tolerate any act that undermines the institution’s values.
The circular also announced strict measures against unauthorised gatherings, photo booths, and vehicle parades around faculties or schools during and after examinations.
“Indiscriminate parading around the campuses in any brand of vehicle will not be permitted. Unauthorised vehicles will be restricted throughout the final examination week,” Bobola added.
Parents and guardians were also cautioned to refrain from visiting the campus during the final exam period to prevent congestion and distractions.
“Parents and guardians of final-year students are advised to stay away from the Faculty or School premises, especially on the last day of examinations,” he said.
UNIBEN’s management said the move aligns with efforts to ensure a safe, peaceful, and academically focused environment as the academic year winds down.
