Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Wednesday represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he is expected to present Nigeria’s position on urgent global challenges.
According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Shettima will deliver the national address between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. New York time.
Nigeria’s statement will spotlight UN reforms, climate action, multilateral cooperation, and international financial restructuring—issues the Tinubu administration has repeatedly emphasized as vital to Africa’s future.
At last year’s UNGA, President Tinubu urged world leaders to grant Africa permanent seats on the UN Security Council. That proposal is now under consideration, and Shettima is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s push for a more inclusive and equitable global order.
Nkwocha noted that Shettima’s presence reflects the administration’s commitment to engaging the global community while ensuring that President Tinubu continues to focus on pressing domestic priorities at home.
