The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has applauded the Super Falcons of Nigeria for securing an early place in the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The nine-time champions booked their spot in the last eight following back-to-back victories in Group B, starting with a commanding 3-0 win over Tunisia and a hard-fought 1-0 triumph against Botswana on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Friday, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, described the Falcons’ performance as a sign of the team’s determination to reclaim the continental title last won in 2018.

“Slowly but surely, the best team in Africa is progressing toward winning a tenth continental title,” said Hon. Amadu, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency. “Winning their first two matches in dominant fashion shows their seriousness and capability. The Super Falcons are clearly focused on reclaiming their crown.”

The lawmaker also reiterated the collective backing of Nigerians and key government bodies behind the team’s campaign.

“The Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and over 180 million Nigerians are fully behind the team,” he said. “We are confident they can go all the way to the final and lift the trophy after a seven-year wait.”

The Super Falcons will round off their group-stage campaign against Algeria on Sunday, July 13. Their quarterfinal opponent will be determined after the conclusion of other group matches, with the knockout stage set for next weekend.

Hon. Amadu concluded by praising the quality and depth of the squad, expressing optimism that the team has what it takes to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
