The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to property owners in Abuja who have failed to pay their ground rents and other statutory taxes, declaring that non-compliance will no longer be tolerated.
Speaking on Wednesday during a media tour of ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in the FCT, Wike emphasized that the renewed revenue enforcement efforts will not be derailed by elite pressure or blackmail.
“Let nobody think that blackmail or whatever will stop us. We will do what we are supposed to do. This is all about leadership,” the Minister stated firmly.
He criticized elite property owners in Abuja who, despite owning assets abroad and complying with foreign tax regulations, refuse to honour similar obligations at home.
“It’s unfortunate that most elites who own houses overseas know the implications of not paying taxes there. They know such houses will be gone. But here, nobody wants to obey the law,” Wike lamented.
The Minister revealed that he has signed more than 1,500 Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-Os) and property assignments since assuming office. Despite this, many recipients, he said, have failed to pay the required taxes.
He reiterated that the two-week compliance window recently granted by President Bola Tinubu will not be extended indefinitely.
Wike highlighted that the FCT administration is under increasing financial pressure due to widespread tax evasion. He stressed the need for enhanced revenue collection to support critical infrastructure projects.
“People want roads, lights, and water, but nobody is asking where the money is coming from. Abuja does not have oil wells. We rely on taxes. And we have not increased ground rents yet. But we will,” he said.
The inspection tour is part of preparations to mark President Tinubu’s second year in office, showcasing infrastructural developments under the current administration.
