Warns Against Misinformation

By Sofiat Adenekan

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday dismissed widespread reports of a suicide bombing in Abuja.

He described the claims as deliberate misinformation aimed at inciting panic and undermining ongoing reforms by the FCT Administration.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday during an inspection tour of infrastructure projects across the territory, Wike clarified that there is no evidence to support the claim of a terrorist attack.

“No security agency has confirmed it was a suicide bomber,” the Minister said. “People must stop creating unnecessary fear in the minds of residents.”

According to Wike, the incident involved an individual who was in possession of an explosive device typically used in quarry operations. The device detonated while it was in the person’s pocket.

“That is not terrorism,” he emphasized. “What happened was that someone took an explosive used for blasting rocks at a quarry site and put it in his pocket. It exploded. We must stop misleading the public.”

He warned individuals and groups spreading false narratives with the intention of blackmailing the FCT Administration that such tactics would not deter the government’s commitment to reforms and public safety.

The Minister reaffirmed that security remains a top priority and assured residents that the administration is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of all.

Wike also used the opportunity to highlight ongoing infrastructural development across the capital, including the nearly completed N5 Road in Life Camp, the Guzape Interchange, and renovations at the International Conference Centre.

He commended contractors for their performance, noting that the timely delivery of projects is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to nationwide development.

The Minister urged the media to practice responsible journalism and called on the public to cooperate with authorities by verifying information before dissemination.
