The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has directed security agencies to closely monitor the movement of individuals into the territory, particularly those who could pose security threats.

The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Olatunji Disu, disclosed this on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the FCT Security Committee meeting held in Abuja.

The meeting, chaired by Wike, was attended by the chairmen of the six area councils of the FCT.

As part of the directive, security agencies have been tasked with setting up a committee to track the influx of Almajiris—children who leave their families to study Islam in Qur’anic schools, mostly in northern Nigeria—as well as other individuals deemed suspicious.

According to Disu, the committee will comprise personnel from the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The team will collaborate with local council chairmen to identify Qur’anic schools where children are enrolled and assess their curriculum and management.

“The committee will profile the school owners and evaluate the content of their training. They will also engage with the school proprietors to determine how the government can support them while ensuring the safety of the children, the schools, and their host communities,” Disu stated.

The committee has been given two weeks to submit its report to the minister.

Meanwhile, ongoing security operations in the FCT have already led to the arrest of five individuals suspected of posing a threat to the territory. The suspects are currently under investigation.

Disu urged residents to remain vigilant and report any unfamiliar faces in their communities to security authorities.

“Everyone should be security conscious. Let’s profile people coming into our environment—we need to know who they are,” he emphasized.
