Akalaka 009: Battle of the Mystic Sword is set to make combat sports history with a groundbreaking male-and-female exhibition boxing contest, as Chima-Cole takes on Inimfon Ekong, popularly known as Woman Pharoah, in a special attraction at the 21 Arena in Abuja.
Organisers described the contest as the first of its kind in Nigeria and the world, with the announcement made during the ceremonial weigh-in, face-off and press conference held on Friday at the same venue where the fights will take place.
The exhibition, which will feature Chima-Cole in the light heavyweight category at -93kg, is expected to be one of the major talking points of the ninth edition of the Battle of the Mystic Sword.
Ekong, who represents Pinnacle Gym and Bodyline Gym Abuja, said the contest was purely an exhibition and should not be interpreted as an endorsement of violence or a challenge to conventional gender roles.
She stressed that women should not be limited from exploring their abilities, while encouraging them to embrace self-defence.
Ekong also cautioned the public against attempting to replicate the contest at home, adding that anyone experiencing domestic abuse should report to the appropriate authorities.
Speaking at the press conference, Dr Grandmaster Ebere Benard described Akalaka 009 as more than a combat sports competition, saying it represents a celebration of culture, tradition, unity and friendship.
He urged fight fans to attend the event, promising an exciting evening of combat sports and entertainment.
Dr Ibrahim Shehu, representing Marwa Self Defence and the North Central zone of the Nigeria Judo Federation, said the competition would showcase courage, confidence, discipline and determination, adding that the fighters had prepared to prove themselves in the ring.
Event producer Idowu Olusayero also promised an entertaining experience, with music and dance performances lined up as part of the side attractions.
The main event will see Jackiel Ayana, popularly known as the ‘Smiling Assassin’, face Victor Dooga, ‘The Benue Boy’, in a featherweight bout, while Fabian ‘The Gentle Giant’ Texas takes on Godwin Ambrose in the light heavyweight co-main event.
The eight-fight card will bring together fighters from Nigeria, other African countries and beyond, competing for the prestigious Mystic Sword trophy.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, at the 21 Arena, Arts and Craft Centre.
Organisers say the competition will be streamed to audiences in more than 50 countries.
