Abuja’s Master Plan Revived as FCDA Accelerates Infrastructure Projects

As Abuja approaches its 50th anniversary, the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) is driving a new wave of infrastructure projects, signaling a revival of the city’s original master plan.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr. Richard Dauda, disclosed this during a presentation to the FCT Minister and FCDA Board Chairman, Nyesom Wike.

Dauda traced Abuja’s evolution from its inception in 1976, following the recommendations of the Justice Akinola Aguda Committee, which led to the relocation of Nigeria’s capital from Lagos and the establishment of the FCT under Decree No. 6 of February 4, 1976.

While Abuja has grown significantly over the decades, infrastructure development progressed slowly for much of its history.

Phase I of the city’s development is now about 85 per cent complete, with established road networks and essential services, including water, power, and telecommunications. Phases II and III lag at roughly 30 per cent and 10 per cent completion, respectively, while Phase IV remains largely underdeveloped.

To address emerging challenges, including a population now projected at 5.5 million, the FCDA has commenced a comprehensive review of the Abuja Master Plan in partnership with the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Dauda highlighted that the pace of infrastructure delivery since August 2023 has been “unprecedented,” crediting the proactive leadership of Minister Wike, popularly known as “Mr. Project,” and the support of President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that inherited projects are being completed while new initiatives are being launched across the city.

The expansion into Phase V, covering districts such as Guzape, Katampe Extension, and Maitama Extension, has increased the planned city area from 562 square kilometres to about 801 square kilometres.

“The vision of our forebearers to build a first-class capital city comparable to the best in the world is on course,” Dauda said, assuring the Minister of the FCDA’s commitment to delivering a “New Abuja.”

He added that Abuja has effectively become a major construction hub as it approaches its golden jubilee, reflecting renewed momentum in urban development across the territory.
